Clearing Up the Misconceptions About Hydroponics: “Chemicals” Don’t Mean Dangerous
Many beginners in hydroponics often worry: “Are A&B solutions dangerous chemicals?” or think they should only use 100% organic nutrients. But the truth is, in hydroponics, “chemical” doesn’t mean toxic — it often means “essential minerals.”

A&B = Mineral nutrients, not poison
Hydroponic A&B solutions contain macro and micronutrients like:
- Nitrogen (N)
- Phosphorus (P)
- Potassium (K)
- Calcium (Ca)
- Magnesium (Mg)
- Iron, Zinc, Copper, etc.
These are not harmful substances. They are the same minerals found in soil, and some are even essential to human health.
Why use “chemical” nutrients?
The term “chemical” sounds scary, but everything around us is made of chemicals — even water (H₂O)! What matters most is what kind of chemical and how it’s used. Those are factors related to safety.
In hydroponics, mineral-based nutrients like A&B:
- Ensure plants get a complete diet
- Are easy to measure and adjust
- Reduce risk of system clogging and bacterial issues
100% organic hydroponics is possible, but harder
100% organic is possible, but these are things to consider and are the reasons why many new growers struggle with fully organic setups.
- Organic nutrients are slow to release
- Can clog pipes easily
- Harder to control (pH and EC).
If you're new to hydroponics, starting with A&B is safer and more predictable. Once you're comfortable, you can explore mixing in organic elements too.
